Nielsen TV Ratings

Nielsen TV RatingsNielsen TV RatingsTelevision professionals get regular report cards on their performance through The Nielsen Company, which tracks audiences for client stations. Understanding their reports is critical in knowing how to build a TV audience and to attract advertisers to your station or network. Understanding How Nielsen Collects Its Audience Data Families are asked to track their viewing habits for a certain period of time. A small collection of these families makes up a sample size that Nielsen uses to estimate the size of a national audience or an audience in a specific region. Get a Nielsen Report If you work at a television station, ask a manager to see a rating book. Because this information is expensive and so important to the success of the business, it is usually closely guarded. If you canbedrngnis get a current rating book, an outdated report will work just as well. In most areas of the country, detailed ratings are released about 30 days after the following months - February, May, July, and November. In other areas and at the networks, the ratings are tracked continually and issued as overnight reports. Look for a Programs Rating Thats an estimate of the percentage of the audience watching a particular program. If Channel 6 nachrichten at 600 has a household audience rating of 15, that means Nielsen has estimated that 15% of the markets household audience is watching it. On the flip side, 85% of the audience may be watching another station, cooking supper or at the movies. A household audience measures homes, not people. So technically, Channel 6 News at 600 is on in 15% of homes - one person might be watching in one home, four in another. The household measurement doesnt take into account that difference. Find the Programs Share The share is an estimate of the percentage of how many households using television are watching the program. If Channel 6 News at 600 has a market share of 30, that means 30% of the homes wat ching TV at 6 oclock are watching that newscast. This number eliminates those cooking supper, at the movies or doing anything else. As a result, the share will always be higher than the rating. Thats because the pie has been made smaller by taking away homes not watching TV. Track a Programs Demographics It is where you will start seeing numbers of people rather than homes. A Nielsen report is divided into a long list of age groups. While it may be tiresome to compare the numbers between women ages 18-34 versus men ages 25-54, these are the numbers that matter most to advertisers. Because the audience pie is now sliced by gender and age group, the numbers will get increasingly smaller. In fact, Channel 6 News at 600 might get (commonly called hash marks) in some categories, like children. That represents either zero or a number that is too small to be important. Spot Trends in the Market Media managers use rating reports to decide whether their program has audience problems . A Nielsen report shows these trends. But because audience measurement is never an exact science, there may be noticeable blips along the way. For instance, Channel 6 News at 600 may do poorly versus its competition in the May rating periods every year. The numbers may recover in each November report. The reason may be because the newscast attracts young families. Those people are out enjoying the nice weather in May and miss the news. They return each November when its cold. Make Room for Error Nielsen has spent decades developing its audience measurement system, but there are several factors to consider when reading the numbers. Nielsen depends on people to accurately record their viewing habits. In some parts of the country, that includes filling out paper diaries that have to be mailed. People can make mistakes and write down the wrong channel or forget to fill out the diary completely. Sample sizes are small. Nielsen cant monitor every home in a city, much less the entire country, so it chooses a small number of people to represent the nation. How the Networks and Advertisers Interpret the Ratings A thick Nielsen report is full of all sorts of numbers, but it is mucksmuschenstill just a snapshot of a moment in time. It takes looking at a series of reports to measure viewing habits accurately. But even one rating book has a section that tracks the numbers over a years time. Thats a quick way to spot patterns. Most stations have moved beyond caring whos number one. Thats because a top news station may be ranked third in afternoons or mornings. Its rare to find a station thats top-ranked throughout the day. Also, advertisers care more about demographics. If they want to reach young adults, they dont care that your news is number one with people 55 and older. The ratings can be interpreted in infinite ways. A station may say its ratings have doubled for its wake-up news. That can mean the program has gone from a 1 rating to a 2. Claims of being the a reas fastest growing news station can be true, but still misleading. Keep that in mind when ratings are used as part of an advertisement. Each station (or network) can find something to brag about if they look hard enough.

How to get a job without prior experience

How to get a job without prior experienceHow to get a job without prior experienceHeres the challenge everyone who starts their career faces You cant get a job because you dont have experience, but you cant get experience without getting a job.Its called the experience paradox or Catch-22 of getting a job. Its a real challenge. And if you cant overcome it, you can easily set your career 3 to 5 years back.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraWorse, Ive seen young folks and people who switch careers destroy their potential by making the wrong decisions early on.I dont want to scare you. You can still overcome the Catch-22 but not with conventional career advice. Because whats the standard advice for people who want to build a career?Create a resume, browse job boards, and respond to job applications. Sorry to disappoint you. If you take that route, you will end up like most people Frus trated and underpaid.Dont worry, theres a different way. With the right strategy, you can break into any industry and earn what youre worth. But I have to warn you. It takes at least twice as much work. However, that shouldnt be a surprise to you. If you want to have a better career than most folks, guess whatyou have to BE better than most folks. When you do the following 2 things, you will become better- that will significantly increase your odds of getting a job without prior experience.1. Be The Person You Would HireWhy is it that companies prefer to hire experienced people for a role? When I started my career, I didnt understand it.The reality is that theres a massive difference between someone who doesnt have experience at a particular job and someone who has two years under their belt.Even though two years might not sound like a lot of time, its actually a lot of time to learn the ins and outs of a job. And especially when you recently got out of college because your first two to three years are all about learning to be a professional. Some people never become serious about their careers. They wake up at a time so they can come to the office just in time. They prefer to sleep in. And they are the first to leave at 5 pm. They dont ask questions, dont seek out mentors, LOVE their lunch break, and chit-chat with their co-workers every chance they get.Imagine you would be the CEO of a company. Would you want a person like that on your team? Of course not.I must be honest I used to be like that too. But I realized that attitude will not bring you far. If you want career success, you need to take it seriously. You only get rewarded for results. And what brings results? Skills. Now, the good news is that increasingly more companies are putting emphasis on the skills of the people they want to hire- not their experience. In his book,The Virgin Way, I read that Richard Branson, the famous founder of Virgin (that employs approximately 71,000 people), hires for charact er and skills. He prefers to actually get to know applicants instead of asking them a bunch of boring questions. If you seek out companies who hire for experience and skills, you have a good chance of getting hired- even if you dont have experience.Theres only one condition You must be a person YOU would hire. Someone whos not only a professional but also has the skills to do a good job. If you feel like your skills are not that good yet, spend more time on your craft. So how do you find a company that hires for skills andcharacter? You ask.Look, getting a job is NOT easy. It requires a lot of manual labor. Sometimes you need to reach out to hundreds of people to even get an interview. So thats what you do. Be ready to do whatever it takes. You reach out to people in HR of companies youd like to work for. And you ask them about their interview process. How does the application process work? What are the characteristics youre looking for in candidates? You can use that information to app ly for jobs youre interested in. But unlike people who blindly apply, you know what they are looking for.2. Do Free WorkOften, being good at your job and having information about the application process wont cut it.Im a big fan of demonstrating your skills instead of talking about it. During the interview, we only talk. But when you offer to do free work for a company, you actually demonstrate your skills in a real-life setting. So how can you do free work? Larry Stybel, a clinical psychologist, wrote an article for HBR about his experience launching his career. He shares 3 great tipsLook for a company youd love to work for and then be specific about what value you will provide- What will you exactly do for the company? No need to overpromise. Its better to be honest about what you can. Identify a person you want to work for, and reach out to them directly. Also send your resume along (watch myvideo on how to create a graphic resume with Canva for tips).Be specific about what value yo u will receive- Start with the end in mind. What do you want to get out of it? A reference? A potential job? Experience?Be specific about the time frame- You dont want to keep working for free forever. In Stybels example, he said I promised to work two days a week for two months. Often, you cant even work full-time for free. Nor is it something I recommend. Use your time to keep searching for a job.One of the key lessons for everyone launching their career is to consideryourself as a learning machine. When you feel too proud to learn or work for free, you will be stuck sooner than later. But when you keep improving yourself and reaching out to people in the industry you want to work in, it will ultimately lead to a real job. This article first appeared on Darius Foroux. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will dou ble your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Wooden Tornado Shelter Withstands High Winds

Wooden Tornado Shelter Withstands High Winds Wooden Tornado Shelter Withstands High Winds Tornadoes wreak destruction across the U.S. every year, killing or injuring hundreds of people and causing millions of dollars in property damage. Some climate experts agree that climate change will increase the frequency and severity of these storms in coming years, putting mora people in harms way.As a result, more homeowners are installing stahlkammer rooms in their homes. These shelters are made from steel or reinforced concrete and are typically located in the basement or under the garage floor. The downside is the cost. Installing a safe room can cost as much as $15,000 or more, which makes many people decide to take their chances with the weather.Soon, however, a more affordable safe room may be on the market, made from basic, low-cost construction material wood.A lumber safe-room wall prior to impact testing (top), and with 2x4 missile imbedded in it.A Wood Tornado Shelter?Thats right, en gineers at Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) in Madison, WI, have built an 8-foot by 8-foot safe room prototype out of wood that can withstand winds up to 250 mph.Robert Falk is the lead scientist on the project. The construction concept is based on nail-laminating 2-inch by 8-inch lumber into a tongue-and-groove beam that can be easily carried into an existing garage or basement. These beams are then stacked into a wall to the height needed. Plywood is then attached, further reinforcing the wall. The interlocking konzept makes constructing the wall easy and results in a layered system that effectively dissipates the energy of debris impact, says Falk.Falk and his engineers tested the energy of debris impact using a debris cannon. The impact tests meet the ICC-500 standard and are conducted at a level commensurate with a 250-mph wind speed A 15-pound, 2-inch by 4-inch missile fired at 100 mph). The design easily passes the impact test, says Falk. In fact, it took six cannon shots all clustered within about 18 inches of each other to fail our latest design per the criteria of ICC-500. Only the plywood layer cracked and no debris was generated. This is a testament to the energy dissipation characteristics of wood and wood construction. This current model of the safe room is constructed from readily available, low-cost building materials, including construction-grade two by eights, three-quarter-inch CDX plywood, nails, and construction adhesive. Falk is trying to further reduce costs by optimizing fastener and adhesive placement, as well as sheathing type. He is also designing the connection system to secure the room to a concrete slab.We expect to have a full-size safe room ready soon for lateral wind load and impact testing in the next few months, he adds. This should verify the wind load capacity of the design as well as connection performance.Saving LivesFalk envisions having online blueprints that can be downloaded so do-it-yourselfers can build their own shel ters. They buy the lumber, take it home, and put it together, says Falk. Thats an important aspect. By providing an economical and easy-to-build safe room, we will increase the number of people who can afford and install one. Another option is providing a kit priced at about $3,000 to $4,000 for wood and materials, including a steel door.Falk is also collaborating with a large wood-products manufacturer to investigate different engineered wood products for a safe-room door. He hopes they can build a wood storm door that will be more economic than currently available steel doors.Robert Bonnie, the U.S. Department of Agricultures undersecretary for natural resources and the environment, is excited about FPLs work. This research is critically important, not only for the direct use of providing safe shelters for people in tornadoes, but also for creating a vibrant wood-products industry, he says.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion By providing an economical an d easy-to-build safe room, we will increase the number of people who can afford and install oneRobert Falk, lead scientist, Forest Product Laboratory
